You’ve been told you need a ‘responsive template’ for your website. But why? What is a responsive template?
Mobile is getting more and more popular. Not just for browsing but also for buying online. Websites used to be designed for desktop computers with wide, big screens. Phones have different requirements:
- Smaller screens so less content fits.
- No mouse for clicking or to hover over links and images.
- Text needs to be bigger and more white space.
- Buttons need to be bigger to accommodate fingers taps instead of mouse clicks.
- Slower connections to page size is more important.
A responsive template “is an approach to web design aimed at crafting sites to provide an optimal viewing experience—easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling—across a wide range of devices (from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones). A site designed …to be responsive… adapts the layout to the viewing environment by using fluid, proportion-based grids, flexible images, and CSS3 media queries.”

Notice how the site does not change at smaller screen sizes. The content simply gets cut off forcing the user to scroll to see the full page.
